Olmsted
The Olmsted Historical Society, Inc., is a nonprofit organization located in Olmsted, Illinois, founded in 1978 when local citizens recognized the need to preserve and promote the history of the village of Olmsted and the surrounding area. The Society seeks to collect, preserve, and interpret the history of Olmsted and the surrounding area, including the stories of the people who have lived and worked here.
The Society operates from the Old Courthouse and Jail in downtown Olmsted. The building was built in 1864 and served as the county seat until 1912, when the county was dissolved. Visitors to the building can view the old jail cells and learn about the history of the building. The Society also operates a research library, which houses a large collection of books, documents, photographs, and other materials pertaining to the history of Olmsted and the surrounding area.
